Indian Pop Star appears in Burqa

Himesh Reshammiya, is an Indian Pop Star who also composes Bollywood music & has given 36 hit songs in one year. Recently he has also appeared in his first film, " Aap Ka Suroor" which released today to the audiences.

It seems that to get publicity for his first film he has apparently caused a furor after dressing in black burqa while visiting a Muslim Shrine.

As per Reshammiya, he dressed in burqa to avoid being mobbed by his fans, while seeking blessing for his new film.

Although an official at said shrine suggested that Reshammiya dress in the burqa, the president of the shrine, Peerzada Sibli Qasim said that the star was "ridiculing Muslin religious tradition".

Singer-turned-actor Himesh Reshammiya apologized for offending religious sentiments after visiting a Muslim Sufi shrine disguised in a burqa.

``If I have committed a mistake, I apologize for it,'' he told reporters outside a shrine dedicated to a mystic Islamic Sufi saint in Rajasthan.

Reshammiya, who is a Hindu, had gone to the shrine of Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti to seek blessings for his debut feature film ``Aap ka Suroor,''. But huge crowds gathered in front of the shrine to watch him and he wasn't able to enter the shrine, the report said.

Can you ever believe a Police force in which 52 % of Cops are alcoholics or addicted to drugs. Yes, Punjab state Police in India is having that many numbers as alcoholics or addicted to drugs. As per one Times of India report:

There can’t be an irony greater than this: the same force that fought the terrorists which included many drugged or drug-peddling militants, is today reporting more and more of its own victims to the scour-ge of substance abuse and addiction.

A survey conducted by the police department in border districts of Amritsar, Taran Taran and Gurdaspur has put the percentage of addicts, including alcoholics, in the police force at a staggering 52%. IG (borderzone) R P Meena said, "Over half of the cops in border regions are alcoholics or into drugs.

They are up to rank of inspectors." While many of the cops have turned alcoholic, the rest are falling prey to opium. There is also a small percentage of policemen who use drugs like smack and heroin.

Crocodiles Scare Tiger Poachers in India

Subscribe to Weird India Subscribe to Weird India in MY YAHOO! Subscribe to Weird India in MY GOOGLE! Subscribe to Weird India in MY MSN! Subscribe to Weird India in MY AOL! Subscribe to Weird India in Rojo!
Wanna have a desire to hunt a tiger, think again. Poachers seeking to bag a Royal Bengal tiger in the Sunderbans reserve in India are encountering a unique new security measure to keep them away: hundreds of crocodiles that have been released in the mangrove forest. Originally brought into the reserve in the late 1990s for breeding, the crocodiles are having the unintended beneficial effect of scaring away poachers from the forest - home to the largest wild population of Royal Bengal tigers.

"With tigers on land and the crocodile in water, the fear factor does work," divisional Forest Officer Rathin Banerjee said Tuesday.

During winter months, the crocs often come out of the cold water and lie in the jungle path of the poachers.

Nearly 400 crocodiles, bred in captivity over the years, have been released in the reserve, Banerjee said. A 2004 census said more than 270 tigers were roaming the reserve in West Bengal state, bordering Bangladesh.

"The use of crocodiles is one of the measures to save the wildlife there from poachers," said V.K. Yadav, a forest conservator.

Conservationist Ranjit Mitra said it was difficult to say how many tigers have been killed by poachers in the past five years, "but it will run into dozens."

Rare species of frog, snake in Orissa

Subscribe to Weird India Subscribe to Weird India in MY YAHOO! Subscribe to Weird India in MY GOOGLE! Subscribe to Weird India in MY MSN! Subscribe to Weird India in MY AOL! Subscribe to Weird India in Rojo!
Two highly endangered species, the crab-eating frog and the white belly mangrove snake, have been spotted in Orissa state in India. The rare species were seen at the river mouth of Dhamra, five kilometres from the Bhitarkanika national park in Kendrapada district, some 170 km from Bhubaneswar, as per Sushil Kumar Dutta, a herpetologist.

Dutta, a zoology professor with the North Orissa University at Baripada, and his team found the frog and the snake during a recent study.

“We stumbled upon this frog and snake while studying the area to prepare an environmental impact assessment report for Greenpeace,” Dutta said.

“They were properly documented and photographed before they were released again in the swampy areas of the river mouth. A team of researchers will again visit the area to search for more rare frogs and snakes,” he said.

The crab-eating frog, scientifically known as ‘fejervarya cancrivora’, is native to Southeast Asia. It inhabits mangrove swamps and is the only known modern amphibian that can tolerate salt water.

The white belly mangrove snake is scientifically known as ‘fordonia leucobalia’. It stays in mangrove swamps and tropical tidal wetlands from Southeast Asia to the coasts of Northern Australia.

The snake hangs out in crab-made holes, after eating its occupants. It is an estuarine species and has all the adaptations necessary for survival in a fully marine life.

'No responsibility for explosion,' parking ticket says

Subscribe to Weird India Subscribe to Weird India in MY YAHOO! Subscribe to Weird India in MY GOOGLE! Subscribe to Weird India in MY MSN! Subscribe to Weird India in MY AOL! Subscribe to Weird India in Rojo!

In Kashmir state of India where violence is quite routine affair due to terrorists activity in the valley , parking lots are also not taking any responsibility for the explosions & ticket of the parking place says 'no responsibility for explosions'.

Due to terrorists activity, daily earnings of houseboat owners at Dal Lake have dipped due to low tourist arrivals in the Kashmir Valley this season.

There has been an alarming 40 percent drop in tourist arrivals this year, which could hit the state's economy - as well as its 110 million population, many of whom depend on tourism, handicrafts and handlooms for survival.

The main reason for the drop in tourism, of course, is concern about safety. Apart from the possibility of terrorist strikes, the fact remains that people on a holiday do not like the sight of gun-toting security men everywhere.

The city comes to a near-standstill after dusk and visitors are not encouraged to step out of their hotels.

Its high time that the state government considers deleting this line from the parking tickets for the Mughal Gardens in Kashmir Valley: 'No responsibility for explosions.'

God enters Woman on a Banyan Tree

Subscribe to Weird India Subscribe to Weird India in MY YAHOO! Subscribe to Weird India in MY GOOGLE! Subscribe to Weird India in MY MSN! Subscribe to Weird India in MY AOL! Subscribe to Weird India in Rojo!
Ascetics, Saints & Devotees do penance for unlimited years to find God but here is a woman from Jharkhand state of India who has found God by climbing a Banyan Tree & praying over there.

Jhirgi Urain, aged 40, a resident of Pola, about 70 km from Ranchi in Jharkhand state of India, has become the centre of attraction in the village after she climbed up a banyan tree and said she will stay there till god wants her to. She went to offer obeisance to a tribal god on June 14 at the base of a banyan tree in her village. Later she climbed up the tree and started praying there.

Urain has been fasting since then and has not come down from the tree. She is only taking water.

When people asked her to come down, she said: "Unless god asks me to do so I will remain here."

A large number of people from far-flung villages are now thronging the banyan tree to offer their prayers to the woman.

"It seems god has entered into her. She is not behaving like a normal human being. Her speech and acts are like god," said Manohar, a villager.

"There is a strong belief in our religion that god finds his way inside a good soul and starts preaching people. Our Sarna god might have entered into her. We are worshipping her to appease our god," he said.

Mystical powers of Hindu monks at Kamakhya

Subscribe to Weird India Subscribe to Weird India in MY YAHOO! Subscribe to Weird India in MY GOOGLE! Subscribe to Weird India in MY MSN! Subscribe to Weird India in MY AOL! Subscribe to Weird India in Rojo!

At the temple complex of Kamakhya, located five kilometers from Gauhati, the capital of Assam state in India you can see one saint standing on a leg for hours while another buries his head in a pit while doing a headstand... thousands of Hindu seers from across the Indian subcontinent are showing their psychic powers at a religious festival that opened here Friday.

Its a celebration of the Goddess Mother Kamakhya & it is held during the monsoon, when the Brahmaputra river is in spate. The fair is called Ambubachi Mela. Kamakhya, also called Kamarupa - the form or shape of love or desire - is India's pre-eminent Shakti peeth where the goddess is worshiped in both her maternal and erotic roles. There is no idol of the deity in the Garbhagriha of the temple. She is worshiped in the form of a yoni-like stone over which a natural spring flows.

Shakti practitioners worship the divine female principle, the immanent power of the absolute, in forms such as Durga, Kali, Lakshmi, Tripurasundari, Bhairavi, and local variations. According to one estimate, 51 Shakti Peeths are strewn across the geographical length and breadth of the Indian subcontinent.

For these monks, the Ambubachi Mela, a four-day Hindu ritual that began at the Kamakhya temple in Assam's main city Guwahati, is the time to exhibit their mystical powers before thousands of devotees.

More than 10,000 monks have converged here from across India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan, besides at least a dozen Westerners.

"We are expecting about 800,000 devotees during the next four days," said Dipak Sharma, a temple trust member.

"The idea of exhibiting our spiritual skills is to show the people that mysticism is not a thing to be written off as many modern day reformists argue. These are powers acquired over the years through deep meditation and direct contact with god," as per Ram Baba, a sadhu or monk from Kolkata.

Ram Baba belongs to the secret Aghor cult, whose adherents meditate in graveyards at night.

The Kamakhya temple has long been considered the highest seat of Tantricism, a sort of black magic that has been an integral part of India's folklore for centuries.

Devotees apart, tourists from far and wide haunt this temple for its structural architecture. There are stone edicts in the temple precincts mentioning the contributions made for the promotion and preservation of Mother Goddess Kamakhya by kings of different lineages dating back to 1526 AD.

Mystics who gather at the temple claim they can perform wonders - make a childless couple conceive, find a distressed loner a spouse, or even cast an evil spell on others.

"The Kamakhya temple is a different world altogether - a paranormal world where most of the sadhus are capable of doing miracles what most people would like to dismiss such claims as rubbish," said Kailash, a frail looking man, his body smeared with ashes and sporting a long beard.

Kailash belongs to a sect called 'Naga sadhus' - often they are people who gave up on worldly life and live a life of severe penance wearing virtually nothing.

These naked sadhus belonged to the non-Vedic or pre-Aryan religion which flourished long before the Vedic religion was introduced into India. Some of the sadhus who have assembled here for the ritual are much sought after.

"I have come to offer my respects to Bhola Baba who blessed me to conceive and bear a child," explained Minakshi Paul, a housewife from Orissa.

Paul said she heard about the Baba from some relatives and visited Kamakhya in 2005 during the Ambubachi Mela - the couple was childless for eight years.

"It was a miracle of sorts. Baba made me drink some whisky poured into a monkey skull after chanting some hymns and said I would surely be able to conceive," she said.

And by 2006 September, a baby girl was born. Blessings apart, many people approach sadhus to cast evil spells on their adversaries.

"More than 90 percent of the people approach us to harm their foes. I am capable of doing anything although I go by my conscience when such requests come," Bhola Baba said while showering blessings on a stream of childless couples.

Police fight new menace: Cuddling couples

Kashmir is the troubled state of India where police normally is fighting with the militants. But nowadays they are doing a different job too. Yes, police in Kashmir state of India is keeping a vigil at teenagers canoodling in parks, restaurants and at Internet cafes.

The crackdown aims to curb “immoral activities”, a senior police officer said yesterday, adding that dozens of places had been raided across Srinagar, the main city of the region, and at least 10 couples detained over the last three days.

Restaurant and Internet cafe owners had also been asked to get rid of cabins and cubicles as they were being “misused” by teenagers in the Muslim-majority region, he said. “We received a number of complaints from parents that their children, mostly teenagers, would stray into cyber cafes and restaurants instead of schools and colleges,” Parvez Ahmad said.

A fall in violence has allowed a marginal easing of security restrictions and freer movement of people in Srinagar, leading to youngsters getting bolder in what is a traditional Islamic society, they say.

Shopkeepers Begging for Coins from Beggars

Subscribe to Weird India Subscribe to Weird India in MY YAHOO! Subscribe to Weird India in MY GOOGLE! Subscribe to Weird India in MY MSN! Subscribe to Weird India in MY AOL! Subscribe to Weird India in Rojo!

In Calcutta city in West Bengal state of India shopkeepers are begging for coins from the beggars and buying coins at prices above their face value. Reason, there is sudden shortage of coins in this city of 14 million.

Reserve Bank of India has resorted to the emergency measures, distributing millions of coins to satisfy the demand.

Since the coin shortage became acute at the beginning of June, the bank has distributed nearly 5 million rupees (US$121,950; Euro 91,664.16) worth of coins, including one million on Thursday alone, said Nilanjan Saha, the bank's treasurer in the city.

But the emergency supplies have failed to appease the demand & nearly 2,000 people stood in two lines on a recent day at the bank to exchange currency notes for coins, many planning to resell them for a profit.

One woman, who asked not to be named, set up shop outside the bank selling packets of 100 rupee coins for 120 rupees.

"It may sound strange, but we have found that beggars are a good source of coins," said Mum Poddar, who runs a small shop selling stationary.

Bank officials said they were mystified by the shortage.

"There is no reason," said Saha. "But I have heard reports that some unscrupulous traders were melting coins because the face value of the coins are lower than the metal value."

The bank was also investigating claims the coins were being melted down to make razor blades.

There are "reports that as many as six blades can be made from one single one rupee coin," said bank security officer Subal Chandra Naskar.

In Kashmir state of India a former Kashmiri rebel was wounded when a tiny detonator planted in a cigarette by suspected militants exploded when he lit it up in a police station, a newspaper report said today.

The small blast, the first of its kind in the revolt-torn Himalayan region, took place in a remote village of Doda district where Mohammad Rafiq had surrendered to police, the Daily Excelsior said.

Squirrel Addicted to Bhang (marijuana)

Bhang is a type of weak marijuana. Bhang is widely available in many parts of India and there is only a mild social stigma attached to it compared to smoking marijuana outright. In India, it is an accepted tradition for many to drink Bhang on special occasions, such as during the Holi festival.

Now as per one "India-TV" report, there is a Sadhu / Baba named "Suraj Nath" in Ujjain city in Madhya Pradesh state of India who himself is addicted to "Bhang (marijuana)" & chews this in its coarse form daily many times. He lives over there in Ujjain under a tree & he has made an unusual friendship with a "Squirrel" living up that tree.

Strange thing is that his friend "Squirrel" is also addicted to Bhang (marijuana) which Sadhu shares with the Squirrel. Whenever, Baba Suraj Nath have an urge to chew Bhang (marijuana), he takes small quantity of it on his palm & calls the Squirrel from the tree. Addict Squirrel on hearing the call from Baba comes running down to the Baba & starts chewing the Bhang from his hand.

After eating good quantity of it, Squirrel goes out of control due to its effect & have a nice sleep. Everyday, Baba Suraj Nath offers this Bhang (marijuana) to the Squirrel many times & the little animal is so addicted to it that it likes Bhang more than food or fruits.

Human Skulls & Bones Smuggling

These human skulls and bones were not for any medicinal study purpose but were for its use in Buddhist monasteries. Police in eastern Indian city "Jaigaon" have discovered a stash of hundreds of human skulls and thigh bones and arrested a gang for allegedly smuggling them to the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan for use in Buddhist monasteries.

Jaigaon (also spelt Jaygaon) is a small town in Jalpaiguri district in the Indian state of West Bengal in India, near the Bhutan border where all this trade is happening.

"During interrogation they confessed that the hollow human thigh bones were in great demand in monasteries and were used as blow-horns, and the skulls as vessels to drink from at religious ceremonies," as per the investigating officer Ravinder Nalwa.

Buddhist monks in India said human thigh bones and skulls were used by followers of a Tibetan school of Buddhism.

They suspect some bones may even have ended up as far away as Thailand and Japan.

In April, police discovered what they called a "human bones factory" in the state, and arrested six people for illegally trading in skeletons. The bones were apparently being sold to medical students and for use in traditional medicine.

Alcoholic Rats raid Liquor Store

Getting alcoholic is not in the domain of humans only. In India Rats have developed a taste for alcohol and are chewing into beer cans and whiskey bottle tops at a police storehouse.

Rats are gnawing at beer cans and making holes in caps of whisky bottles stored in police storehouses in eastern India and apparently getting drunk, authorities said.

The rodents' love for liquor has the police department in Bihar state of India stumped as it tries to store hundreds of bottles seized from illegal sellers from across the state in Capital City Patna, said Kundan Krishnan, a senior officer.

"We are fed up with these drunk rats and cannot explain why they have suddenly turned to consumption of alcohol," he said.

The problem costs revenue as the seized liquor is usually sold through auctions, he said.
Rats were also attacking people near the police buildings, nibbling at their toes, although it was not clear if they were under the influence, officials and witnesses said.

Though she may be physically challenged but her resolve was to pass exams & this girl from Tripura state of India has passed her Class 10 board examinations by writing with her feet.

Swapna Biswas, aged 17 is born with a deformity that prevents both her hands from functioning. She belongs to Uttar Nalichara village in Dhalai district in Tripura state of India. Swapna fought her way through life without letting the disability prevent her from leading as normal a life as possible.

Swapna used her feet to do all daily chores, from cooking to fetching water, and learnt to write by holding her pen between her toes. Naturally, she was jubilant when she secured a second division in the Class 10 examinations.

"I want to pursue my studies as I have eyes and can write with my feet," Swapna said.

But abject poverty has forced her to sell puffed rice on the streets instead of seeking admission in a college.

Swapna lost her father, a daily wage earner, when she was a child. And the girl's mother says the family is too poor to fund Swapna's higher studies.

No Garlands for Gods in 'Siddhivinayak Temple'

Subscribe to Weird India Subscribe to Weird India in MY YAHOO! Subscribe to Weird India in MY GOOGLE! Subscribe to Weird India in MY MSN! Subscribe to Weird India in MY AOL! Subscribe to Weird India in Rojo!

"Siddhivinayak Temple" is Mumbai's most famous Hindu temples. Temple authorities have barred worshippers from giving traditional offerings of garlands & coconuts to Lord Ganesh, the elephant-headed god of good fortune, out of fears that bombs could be hidden inside.

"As of today we have asked people not to bring in coconuts," said Subash Mayekar, a trustee at central Mumbai's Siddhivinayak Temple. He said worshippers are also prohibited from bringing floral garlands, but added, "a few flowers in their hands are all right."

Security measures have been stepped up at many temples across India after a temple in the Hindu holy city of Varanasi was targeted in an attack last year.

"Explosives could be placed inside coconuts and we have to be careful," said Mayekar, adding that the process of searching all the worshippers' offerings was causing long delays.

Worshippers are not happy with the decision by the temple.

"It is sacrilegious not to offer coconuts. It goes against Hindu faith and custom," said S. Ganesan, who has written a book on the temple. "They should instead update their security. If a terrorist wants to create trouble, he does not need a coconut."

Worshippers traditionally walk barefoot for many miles to Siddhivinayak Temple hoping their prayers to Ganesh, the god of good fortune, are answered. Thousands of people visit the temple daily.

In a bizarre incident, a woman in Balangir district of Orissa state of India declared one of her child ‘dead’ so that she could contest the panchayat election. The reason: Those who have more than two children cannot contest local polls in the state.

Arati Meher, who is now the Sarpanch of Juba panch-ayat, even submitted a death certificate to prove that she has only two children and therefore eligible to fight the election. However, Minakshee Meher, whom Arati defeated, says her rival’s child is alive and living under a different name with a relative.

This 73-year-old Indian farmer vowed not to marry before passing his high school exams but he has failed to get through for the 38th time.

Shiv Charan Yadav from Kohari village in Rajasthan state of India has been taking the exams— normally given to school children at the age of 15 —every year since 1969, without success.

He was in his 30s when he first decided to better himself through education.
This year, he failed everything except Sanskrit, scoring only 103 out of a possible 600 points.

He said he found mathematics especially hard, blaming the subject for dragging down his score.

"Once I pass I want to get married to a girl who's under 30," Yadav said.

He is now revising for his 39th attempt next year.

Yesterday afternoon, prison guards heard loud snoring from one of the buildings.

A groggy Gaji seemed surprised when he found himself surrounded by guards pointing rifles at him, a senior jail official said.

'Presidential Palace' faces Water Shortage

Subscribe to Weird India Subscribe to Weird India in MY YAHOO! Subscribe to Weird India in MY GOOGLE! Subscribe to Weird India in MY MSN! Subscribe to Weird India in MY AOL! Subscribe to Weird India in Rojo!

Water scarcity in summers in New Delhi, capital of India is not uncommon but this could figure in Ripley’s believe it or not! Summer sizzle has not spared even India's first citizen from getting exposed to harsh urban realities.

Presidential Palace or Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi, one of the most imposing symbols overlooking the Republic’s corridors of power, is facing water shortage. You may even get to see tankers supplying water to the president’s estate — just like a shoddy lane tucked away in a corner of any metro.

"Rashtrapati Bhavan" which is the official residence of the President of India is a posh 133-hectare estate which faced acute water shortage on Friday & the Delhi Jal Board (Delhi Water Body) received a letter to this effect from the Rastrapati Bhavan.

“The letter said the "Rastrapati Bhavan" is reeling under acute water shortage for the last few days and if need be they would require additional water tankers,” a senior DJB official said. “We have enough tankers and we are fully prepared,” the official said.

According to sources, 2 million litres of water is required for the Rashtrapati Bhavan every day; the annual water requirement is 730 million litres.

Perched on Raisina Hill, the Rashtrapati Bhavan is a township within itself: besides 340 rooms in the main building, there are 7,000 residents at any given time, and approximately 3,000 people visit the presidential premises daily.

It has a school, post office, bank for the staff and family besides tennis courts, swimming pool, ornamental canals, garden pools (Mughal Garden) and fountains, theatre, club for the First Family and their guests. There are also acres of rolling gardens and forests, which need a lot of water.

Paris Hilton & Indian JailBirds

It is not only "Paris Hilton" who is walking in and out of the jail, in India there are many in Rajkot jail in Gujarat state of India who have the privilege to do so. Only, unlike Hilton, they check into hospitals and some like murder accused Kandhal Jadeja, son of mafia don Santokben Jadeja aka Godmother, use the opportunity to escape.

A number of under trials, who have money and muscle power, manage to shift to hospitals on the pretext of medical treatment. Once in hospital, they can stay in spacious rooms and avail of facilities like television sets and what not.

Take the case of "Manu Harsur", a murder accused lodged in Rajkot jail from April 2003. He has spent 100 days out of the jail till February 7, 2007 on the pretext of medical treatment. Harsur was in the same hospital from where Kandhal escaped on February 6, 2007 and was immediately called back to jail.

It is no secret that Harsur attended many parties thrown by Kandhal in the hospital room!!!!!!!!! Indeed such people are able to do so as they have money power & muscle power.

School Trains Women to be Submissive, Ideal Wives!

Subscribe to Weird India Subscribe to Weird India in MY YAHOO! Subscribe to Weird India in MY GOOGLE! Subscribe to Weird India in MY MSN! Subscribe to Weird India in MY AOL! Subscribe to Weird India in Rojo!
It may sound Bizarre but its true! In Bhopal City in Madhya Pradesh state of India here is one school that trains women to become ideal, obedient and submissive wives and daughters-in-law. "Manju Sanskar Kendra" school in Bhopal city was founded in 1987 & teaches young women the art of being good wives by serving their husbands and in-laws, and thereby preventing splits in the family.

'The primary aim of the Kendra is to prevent Indian families from breaking up under the pressures it faces nowadays,' says Bhau Ayaldas Hemnani, the founder and director of the rather unique school.

It offers a three-month course that stresses on the importance of 'Indian culture' and the woman adjusting to her new family after marriage. While students spend the first month learning Sikh and Hindu scriptures, the second month has lessons in naturopathy and the third is entirely dedicated to domestic life.

As per Hemnani, 'We teach women how to serve their husbands and win laurels and how to behave with in-laws. We also tell them to be tolerant while adjusting to their new home,'.

Women's rights activists and groups have termed the very idea of the school 'ridiculous', anti-women and regressive. They have in fact suggested that schools now be opened to train ideal husbands too.

'We don't have any objection if the centre starts teaching men to be an ideal husband, father or son. It would be a step towards building a balanced society. Why only train girls to be submissive?' asks Sandhya Shelly, state president of the All India Democratic Women's Association.

Chandna Arora of the All India Women's Council, says: 'Thousands of women are doused with kerosene and set on fire by their greedy husbands and their families. Most of these dowry-related deaths are passed off as kitchen accidents. How will they resist dowry or other domestic abuse?'

Contrary to one's expectations, the centre is very popular with over 4,500 having graduated from it so far.

'Drunk' driver manages Delhi's traffic

Subscribe to Weird India Subscribe to Weird India in MY YAHOO! Subscribe to Weird India in MY GOOGLE! Subscribe to Weird India in MY MSN! Subscribe to Weird India in MY AOL! Subscribe to Weird India in Rojo!
Can a person convicted for drunken driving assist police in managing the Delhi's traffic? Yes, a court in New Delhi has been sentenced to assist the police in managing the Delhi's traffic for 10 days. On Sunday, he donned the mantle of a traffic cop even as legal experts questioned the legality of the court ruling.

"Deepak Gupta", a resident of south Delhi, was convicted on June 4 by Metropolitan Magistrate Gautam Manan for driving in an inebriated state without license in Mayapuri in west Delhi on Feb 16.

On Sunday, Gupta reached the Kalkaji roundabout at 10 a.m. and sought the day's assignment from the traffic cops present there.

A couple of hours later, after successfully flagging down quite a few red light offenders, Gupta told reporters that he felt sorry that he had violated traffic rules and realizes how difficult it is to manage traffic.

Constitutional expert and senior Supreme Court advocate P.P. Rao said: 'The novel judgment on punishment has left me wondering if we are heading to a system of 'quasi justice'.'

'A court is not al all empowered to impose such discretionary sentences which have not been provided by the parliament or legislature in the relevant laws. This would lead to courts resorting to unguided discretion in imposing sentences and it would mitigate the rule of law,' said Rao.

'On the face of it, the sentence is illegal. No court is empowered to impose a punishment which is not prescribed by the legislature,' added Kumar.

Delhi Police too appeared baffled by the sentencing of the court.

Ramanimohan Pal, aged 69 is happy at the Class 12th exams results. No, his grandson has not passed out, it is he himself who has cleared 12th exams & is finally out of School. Pal is having five grandchildren & has created a history by becoming the oldest student in Tripura state of India to pass this year's Class 12 exams.

As per Pal, "I am indeed excited to have cleared the exams and now my goal is to complete graduation in the Arts stream as a regular student, I would now apply for admission to B.A. (Bachelor of Arts) course with English, Bengali, Political Science, Economics and Geography as my subjects."

Well-wishers and relatives thronged Pal's residence offering him sweets and garlands. "He has shown that education is all about determination and hard work and that there is no age limit for acquiring knowledge," his 63-year-old wife Leela said.

A cardiac patient who underwent a bypass surgery eight years back, Pal was the cynosure of all eyes when he appeared for the exams from a local school in state capital Agartala this year as a private candidate with youngsters in the age group of 17 to 18 flanked on either side.

He had last appeared to clear the Class 12 exams along with his wife way back in 1967. "I don't know what happened to me, but I decided to walk out of the exam hall moments after the invigilator distributed the question paper on the first day itself," Pal said. Pal retired in 1996 from Public Health Engineering department.

He was then a state government employee. "My dream of studying and earning a degree however turned into a reality through my children - Debabrata, Mousumi and Jayanta - when they became engineers," he said.

'Elephant Boy' is now back in School

Subscribe to Weird India Subscribe to Weird India in MY YAHOO! Subscribe to Weird India in MY GOOGLE! Subscribe to Weird India in MY MSN! Subscribe to Weird India in MY AOL! Subscribe to Weird India in Rojo!

Earlier "Ganesh Vaibhav" was called the "Elephant Boy", but no longer now. Ganesh, aged six-years from India was born with the grotesque, life-threatening facial deformity. The boy, named after Ganesha, an Indian god with a trunk-like nose, became news in India after his father wrote to an ETV producer, asking him to profile the boy on TV. Ganesh's father supports his family by fermenting milk to make yogurt.

Reports in Indian newspapers said Ganesh's strange appearance caused him to be shunned. He had few friends and some schools denied him admission.

Now thanks to an operation of more than 10 hours, performed in India by a surgical team led by Sarnia plastic surgeon Sanjeev Kaila, Ganesh has a nose and eyes that look normal. Earlier Doctors told his father Ganesh would lose his eyes and possibly his life if they operated.

"It's a great nose, a cute button nose," said nurse Sheila Groombridge, who accompanied Kaila to southern India for the surgery at the NRI Academy of Sciences at Vijayawada in India.

Gone is the mass of brain tissue, covered only by stretched muscle and skin, that protruded from a hole between Ganesh's eyes, like a short elephant trunk.
The rare congenital skull defect, called a nasofrontal meningocele, put the boy at risk of such potentially fatal brain diseases as meningitis.

"The health risk is gone," said Kaila.

"Ganesh is healthy. He looks normal. He's back with his family and back in school.

600 People to Serve 6 of Family

Subscribe to Weird India Subscribe to Weird India in MY YAHOO! Subscribe to Weird India in MY GOOGLE! Subscribe to Weird India in MY MSN! Subscribe to Weird India in MY AOL! Subscribe to Weird India in Rojo!

Dharavi is a slum in Mumbai which houses a million people & is called the Asia's largest slum. Here you can find ramshackle corrugated tin structures, houses made of sheets of asbestos where these million people live in inhuman conditions. In the same city there are many other slums where many more millions live in inhuman conditions. Over here only, the country’s richest man, Mukesh Ambani, is building a new home in the financial Capital of India - Mumbai (Bombay): a 27-storey skyscraper mansion in the heart of the city.

Mukesh Ambani of Reliance Industries is the wealthiest Indian and the world’s 14th richest man with a net worth of US$20.1 billion. He is making this glass mansion on Altamound Road called “Antilla.” The name is derived from a phantom island in the Atlantic Ocean to the west of Spain.

Mansion shall have everything from a swimming pool to a personal car-servicing center for the Ambani family’s 168 imported cars. It shall have a staff of 600 employees who shall be at the service of 6 Family members consisting of Mukesh Ambani , his wife Nita Ambani , their 3 children & Mukesh's mother Kokilaben Ambani. It shall be built on 4,532-square-metre plot.

Ambani’s architect has said the first six floors of the skyscraper mansion will be reserved for parking. Immediately above will be lodgings for 600 servants and their families. Eight floors have been reserved for “entertainment,” including a mini-theatre and a number of swimming pools, and several more floors will house a health club and rooms for guests.

In actuality, it is about 60 floors, but it has been reduced to 27 stories to make the ceilings a bit higher. A helipad or an air space floor is planned on the uppermost area, functioning as a control room for landing choppers. The eighth floor will have a mini theatre, which can seat 50, and will be used for recreational activities. A two-storied glass-front apartment will serve as guest rooms. Three floors will serve as terrace gardens with balconies. And the facility will be staffed, around the clock, with 600 employees.

Mukesh Ambani, his wife, three children, and mother will occupy the top four, non-service floors, giving them a panoramic view of both Mumbai’s Arabian Sea coastline and the city’s skyline as well as easy access to three helipads on the skyscraper’s roof.

The design also calls for a refuge center in case of emergencies and of course a health center, including a health spa and gym. Other additions to the family home of 27 stories will include six floors for parking - exclusively for the family’s automobiles.

Draped in hanging gardens the ceilings are three times as high as a normal building’s, the 173m tower will only have 27 floors.

With property prices rocketing, the building is already worth more than US$ 1.2 Billion ( roughly the average annual income of 1.5 million Indians). It is expected to be ready for the Ambanis to move in next year. The family currently live in a 14-storey building, Sea Wind.

Their new home will be “comparable to those owned by friends such as Lakshmi Mittal”. The UK-based steel tycoon bought the most expensive house in London last year, paying £60mn for a place in Kensington Palace Gardens.

Dead Teacher still Earning Salary

Subscribe to Weird India Subscribe to Weird India in MY YAHOO! Subscribe to Weird India in MY GOOGLE! Subscribe to Weird India in MY MSN! Subscribe to Weird India in MY AOL! Subscribe to Weird India in Rojo!
It can happen only in India. Dead people voting, drawing subsidies from the Government, drawing salaries etc. etc. It seems all such type of weird things happen only in India. Take the case of this dead school teacher in Nalanda district in Bihar state of India, who has been teaching students and regularly getting her salary. She has also been signing the school attendance register!!!!!!

During an enquiry following complaints, it came out that a dead woman schoolteacher's salary was withdrawn from the school accounts. As per the education department officials, Leela Kumari, a teacher at a government middle school in Nalanda district, about 100 km from here, died seven years ago. "An application by her relatives in this connection was available with the department" officials said.

However, school records show that she has been teaching students and getting her salary. During the visit of a team of education department officials to the school last month, a teacher in the school claimed that she was Leela Kumari.

The Nalanda district education officer has requested the Finger Print Bureau to inquire into this case. "We have sent the finger prints of the dead Leela Kumari and the finger prints of the school teacher who claimed she is Leela Kumari to the bureau for inquiry," Shahjanand Kumar, education officer said.

As per Mr. Kumar,"This case appears to be very complicated. Only a scientific inquiry will bring out the truth."

Mooing' Ringtones used to catch Leopards

Subscribe to Weird India Subscribe to Weird India in MY YAHOO! Subscribe to Weird India in MY GOOGLE! Subscribe to Weird India in MY MSN! Subscribe to Weird India in MY AOL! Subscribe to Weird India in Rojo!
Ringtones are favorites of any Mobile phone user. Every user downloads & wants to listen to their choicest Ringtones, whenever, their Mobile Phone rings up. But can Ringtones of Mobile be used to catch the Leopards!!!! Sounds strange but Forest guards in Gujarat state of India have made it possible to lure Leopards with the help of Mobile phone Ringtones.

Forest guards in Gujarat are actually using Cell phones with Ringtones of cows mooing, goats bleating and roosters crowing to attract the leopards & they are falling in the trap also. Earlier they have been using methods such as live bait like goats tied to trees to lure the leopards, which then fall into large pits dug by the guards.

Leopards often roam into the nearby villages of the forests in search of food & that often results in attacks on the people of villages.

As per one forest official in Gujarat state of India, Mr. D. Vasani,"The moos of a cow, bleating of a goat from the phone has proved effective to trap leopards & this trick works"

As per Mr. Vasani , forest guards have downloaded the sounds of over a dozen animals as Ringtones on their mobiles which they attach to speakers and fix it behind a cage.

Then they play the Ringtone continuously for up to two hours until the curious leopard appears and moves into the cage looking for its easy meal.

Till now Five Leopards have been lured from nearby villages since the new Ringtone method was introduced a month ago.

If you ask any Parent, what would they like their children to be, when they grow up, certainly many would answer as " Doctor', " Engineer", "IT Professional" etc. etc. But can you ever imagine parents preferring their children to get trained as professional thieves, pickpockets and gangsters rather than send them to school.

Weird & incredible it may sound but there is a village in Bihar state of India where parents want their children to carry on with the above mentioned unusual professions. So here is the story of Musepur-Jurabganj village under Korha police station in Katihar district, about 200 km from Patna in Bihar State of India, where expert elders provide training to children in the art of stealing.

"Children are being kept out of schools and are being trained to steal. Only a few children are enrolled in schools," a police official said.

Most people in the village, which has a population of about 4,000, are engaged in the same profession, the officer said.

"People within the age group of 15 to mid 40 are engaged either in theft, pick-pocketing, burglary or looting," the officer added.

A Hindi daily reported that a man named Bhola Yadav is the kingpin of the racket and is instrumental in training the children and sending them to metros and small towns across India.

All the thieves of the village are members of a committee that monitors and manages the daily working of the group.

"It is mandatory to send the collected money back to the village committee because it distributes money and goods to thieves and others engaged in similar professions," the official said.

The committee also hires lawyers to bail the thieves out when they are arrested and charged, the officer said, adding that it also keeps a percentage of the looted money and goods for smooth functioning of the village.

Cases of medical negligence during operating on a person had earlier been reported but this is an unusual case in which a pair of forceps from the abdomen of a young woman were removed that were left carelessly by doctors who operated on her four years ago.

Incident happened in Jenapur village in the district of Cuttack some 40 km from the state capital Bhubaneswar in Orrisa state of India where Binapani Khatua, aged 25 was operated again on Saturday to remove a pair of forceps or surgical pincers from her abdomen. She was suffering from pain in the abdomen since the day she was delivered, by a Caesarean section, of her first child four years ago.

During operation at the sub-divisional government hospital at Athagarh in her home district the doctors had left the forceps in her abdomen, as per the woman.

"My wife had suffered intense pain because of the doctors' negligence. The government should punish such negligent doctors," Kathua's husband said.

Lo its Gone - Confessions of a Car thief

Subscribe to Weird India Subscribe to Weird India in MY YAHOO! Subscribe to Weird India in MY GOOGLE! Subscribe to Weird India in MY MSN! Subscribe to Weird India in MY AOL! Subscribe to Weird India in Rojo!
As per one Times of India report, here below are some interesting ways in which this "Car Thief" from Mumbai steals & changes the cars altogether within no time :

"Salim Sheikh had a reputation for using his nimble fingers to strip luxury cars in a few minutes of their 'nut and bolt' (as roadside argot goes).

After he was arrested and booked for stealing seven cars, Sheikh proudly told investigators that he could change the complexion and character of any car within a few hours.

Essentially, he would change the colour of the car, its upholstery, the rims on the tyre, clutch pad, brake pad and steering. The touch of ingenuity would be to steal two identical models within a short span and then interchange their chassis: both vehicles would thus be completely unrecognisable to even the original owners.

The 'overhauled' car would then be ready to begin a new life with a new number plate and a fake Registration Certificate (RC) book in a different city under an unsuspecting buyer. "

So dear friends, take care of your cars well as these type of thieves might be prowling in your area also.

In a rare & bizzarre instance of its kind, winners were decided in two Bihar civic body wards by toss of coin after four candidates polled the same number of votes.

This unusual method was resorted to after two candidates each finished at par in Motihari and Chapra, Election Commission official Raghuvansh Kumar Sinha said here.

Motihari is the headquarters of East Champaran district bordering Nepal, 200 km from Patna. Chapra in Saran district is located 150 km from Patna.

Sinha said a total of 2,864 wards saw elections across the state. He added that the contestants in the two places where coins were tossed to decide the winner accepted the outcome.

In an interesting case a cowherd has been elected a councillor defeating powerful candidates in the urban civic bodies elections in Bihar.

Anil Das, a poor man in his 50s, had been working as a cowherd and farm labourer for the past 25 years. He has now been elected as the councillor of ward number 20 of Fatuha Nagar Parishad in Patna district.

Das, who belongs to a backward agrarian caste, had never dreamt of becoming a ward councillor. His neighbours said his honesty and dedication towards society helped him win the support of people.

"He usually worked as a cowherd and also worked as a labourer like dozens of villagers but his honest image helped him," said a neighbour.

Can an Eight-year-old boy be a 'Serial killer'. But it seems all types of anomalies occur in nature. Take the case of "Amardeep Sadaheld" of Musahari village of Bhagwanpur in Bihar State of India who is held as a serial killer after his third murder when he brutally strangled six-month-old Khushboo in his neighborhood . As per the Police he is a serial killer as he had earlier strangled to death his sister and cousin.

The earlier two killings went unreported. However, Amardeep's crime could not be pushed under the carpet this time since his latest victim was not a family member but lived in his neighborhood in Musahari village under the Bhagwanpur police station.

Khushboo was sleeping alone in the village primary school while her mother Chunchun Devi was busy with chores at her house nearby when Amardeep strangled the infant and hit her with a brick before attempting to bury the body in the nearby field.

Family tries to revive Son's corpse

Subscribe to Weird India Subscribe to Weird India in MY YAHOO! Subscribe to Weird India in MY GOOGLE! Subscribe to Weird India in MY MSN! Subscribe to Weird India in MY AOL! Subscribe to Weird India in Rojo!
Another case of superstition & blind faith in India in which a family tried to revive the corpse of an Indian man who believed that a witch doctor could bring him back to life, three days after he died.

"Arun Majhi", aged 21, from Bhejapadar village in the eastern state of Orissa in India died after he was bitten by a snake while roaming in the jungle near his home for firewood and his grieving family buried him as per the customs of the family. But two days later, Majhi's mother dreamt that her son could come back to life. So the family dug his grave, exhumed the corpse and hired Natabara Sahu, a local witch doctor, who promised to do his best.

"I am sitting beside my son waiting for him to come back to life," Bibhisan Majhi, the Arun's father said as he fanned Arun's corpse, which was covered with a mosquito net.

But with Arun still dead two days after the witch doctor was hired, the family gave up and reburied him in Bhejapadar village in the eastern state of Orissa.

Man buries Son to earn a living

Subscribe to Weird India Subscribe to Weird India in MY YAHOO! Subscribe to Weird India in MY GOOGLE! Subscribe to Weird India in MY MSN! Subscribe to Weird India in MY AOL! Subscribe to Weird India in Rojo!
"India Shining", "Indian economy rising at 9-10% per annum", "India has maximum number of Dollar Billionaires in Asia", "India nowadays has maximum per capita income since India became independent in 1947". All these phrases paint a rosy picture of India which is emerging as a great economy. But in the same India, as per a TV report today on Channel "Aaj Tak", here is a man who buries his son for 16 hrs just to earn a living.

As per the TV report, a man in "Saharanpur City" in "Uttar Pradesh" state of India is showing an event (Tamasha), in which the man digs an eight feet deep big pit & then puts his 14-15 years old son "Guudu" in the pit & covers the pit with earth again. Then this man do cycling around the pit for 16 hrs during which people over there see all that event (Tamasha) & some onlookers even clap during that event.

After 16 hrs, the man again digs the pit, sends 2-3 persons inside the pit, who take out "Guudu" in the unconscious state from the pit. He is revived from unconsciousness & he again sits up, drinks water etc. After seeing all that event (Tamasha), people around there start clapping & give money to them for their entertainment.

Interestingly, it happens only 200 kms from New Delhi , capital of India. Police over there also becomes mute spectator & do not do anything. As per the "Guudu", he has done so earlier also 3 times & he does it all just to earn a living. As per him, only God knows whether he shall come alive after being buried alive but he has to do all that just to earn a living, just to fill his stomach, just to earn little money so that their daily needs get fulfilled.

Isn't it weird that a father risks his son's life just to earn a living? Is it the same "India Shining" where economy is rising at 9-10%. It is indeed bizarre!!!!!!!

Subscribe to Weird India Subscribe to Weird India in MY YAHOO! Subscribe to Weird India in MY GOOGLE! Subscribe to Weird India in MY MSN! Subscribe to Weird India in MY AOL! Subscribe to Weird India in Rojo!

Some say its a snake but its not a serpent at all & is a completely new species of limbless "Lizard". The 7-inch-long lizard looks like a small snake, and it prefers to live in a cool retreat, soft soil and below stones.

A group of zoologists in Orissa state of India have located a new species of limbless lizard said to be new to science. As per Professor "Sushil Kumar Dutta" of the North Orissa University, Baripada, "It is an important discovery and preliminary scientific study reveals that the lizard belongs to the genus sepsophis".

Dutta, who led a research team of ''Vasundhara'', a policy analysis, research and action group, on a field study to the Khandadhar hills in Sundargarh district found the limbless lizard during a survey recently. The lizard, which belonged to the family 'scincidae'', is new to science and is an important discovery from the biogeographic point of view, Dutta said.

Another species of the same genus had been reported in 1870 from the golconda hills in Andhra Pradesh after which this is the first time that this limbless lizard had been found and it bears significance from the biodiversity point of view, Dutta said. "The new speci will be scientifically described at a later stage after accumulation of more scientific data", Dutta said.
