Not choppers or limos, Groom’s party travels on rickshaws

Chandigarh: Flaunting designer clothes, loads of jewellery and expensive accessories, a London-based NRI family chose a rather different way to travel to the wedding venue - pedal-rickshaws and horse carts. NRI Murli Vohra’s son Pawan ignored the usual mode of chartered aircraft, helicopters and limousines that rich people travel in to make a style statement on weddings.

Pawan, who was getting married at a gurudwara (Sikh temple) in Sector 11 here Saturday, hired 35 pedal rickshaws and half a dozen horse carts instead of luxury cars to drive the nearly 100 NRI ‘baraatis’ (groom’s party) to the wedding venue. Where Brothers Share Wife as Family Tradition

HIMACHAL PRADESH, India: Amar and Kundan Singh Pundir are brothers. Both aged in their forties, the two brothers have lived together nearly their whole lives. They are poor and share just about everything: Their home, their work and a wife.

"See we have a tradition from the beginning to have a family of five to 10 people. Two brothers and one wife." Kundan says.

They practice what is known as fraternal polyandry - where the brothers of one family marry the same woman. Why? Tradition and economics.
Life is hard here. The village is precariously perched on the side of a very steep hill about 6,000ft up. Most of the villagers survive off tiny plots of cropland.

In this difficult terrain there isn't enough land to go around. So, instead of finding separate wives and splitting up their inherited property, the brothers marry the same woman and keep their land together. Read more..............Brothers share wife to secure family land

MUMBAI, India – India's only gorilla is lonely. Even though Polo is 6 feet tall, dark-haired, bilingual and good-natured, the 36-year-old silverback gorilla is still single after a fruitless eight-year search.

"We have written to all major zoos in the world. We have tried everything," said Vijay Ranjan Singh, the director of the zoo in Mysore, a city in southern India about 525 miles southeast of Mumbai.

Polo, who was sent to Mysore from Ireland's Dublin Zoo in 1995, has been alone since 2000 when his mate, 46-year-old Sumathi, died. Read more....................India's only gorilla alone despite search for mate

Largest 'Jalebi' for Guiness Book of World Records

Subscribe to Weird India Subscribe to Weird India in MY YAHOO! Subscribe to Weird India in MY GOOGLE! Subscribe to Weird India in MY MSN! Subscribe to Weird India in MY AOL! Subscribe to Weird India in Rojo!
Jalebi (Hindi: जलेबी; Urdu: جلیبی ) is a fried sweet made from maida flour, commonly prepared in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Jalebi is thought to have originated in the northern India, most likely in the Punjab region. It is made by deep-frying batter in a pretzel shape, instead of the funnel cake shape common in the U.S., then soaked in syrup.

Now Meghalaya Tourism Development Forum in India is preparing to make the largest "jalebi" to feature in Guiness Book of World Records.

The attempt of frying the jelebi (75 inch diameter), large enough to cover a human being, will be made by a local confectionary - Delhi Mistan Bhandar - during the festival that starts on November 1.

MTDF Chairman R G Lyngdoh said the jelebi would weigh around 20 kg and would be fried in a pan of six feet three inches diameter.

Recently 147 people died in temple stampede in Jodhpur in Rajasthan state of India. Incident happened at Chamunda Devi temple in Jodhpur’s Mehrangarh Fort for a darshan of the goddess.

In fact it is such a Religious madness in India that in 2008, stampedes have killed 360 while, blasts have killed 156 people.

In fact in India, religious and cultural pilgrimages where gatherings running into lakhs of people on days of special religious or spiritual significance are a regular feature. Large congregations are institutionalised in Hinduism — like the ageless tradition of Kumbha Melas. Apart from the Kumbha Melas, there are major temples like Tirupati and Guruvayoor in the south, Vaishno Devi in the north and Kamakhya in the northeast, as also lesser known ones like Naina Devi in Himachal Pradesh and Chamunda Devi in Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur, Rajasthan.

My view is that God resides in everyone's own heart. If a person wants to worship the God then he/she can do worship while sitting in his/her home & silently praying within oneself only.
